Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 9.2% in January compared to the same month in 2022, according to an analysis released by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Overall, local collections totaled $1.89 billion, up $159 million compared to the same time last year.

Niagara County DA announces guilty plea in hate crime case

Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced Howard J. Murphy, age 61, of the Town of Niagara, entered a guilty plea in County Court to the crime of criminal mischief in the second degree, as a hate crime. Murphy admitted to vandalizing a neighbor's fence on May 16, 2022, by spraypainting onto it a violent message containing a racial slur. The incident occurred just two days after the mass shooting at Topps in Buffalo.

Flynn announced a jury has found 32-year-old Cortez Foster of Buffalo guilty of one count of murder in the second degree (class "A-I" felony) and one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree (class "C" violent felony). Jurors rendered their decision Wednesday afternoon after approximately two-and-a-half hours of deliberation following a five-day trial, convicting the defendant of all charges in the indictment against him.
