Structure fire in Ransomville

On Friday, the Niagara County Communications Center received a report of a structure fire at 3604 Curtis Ave., Ransomville. Deputies arrived on scene and observed heavy smoke coming from the northwest corner of the residence. All occupants and two canines were safely evacuated without injury. Ransomville and Wilson Fire Companies responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire. The damage was contained to the northwest corner of the structure.

Closure of all schools will continue now through Wednesday, April 29. The governor states this will again be reassessed in two weeks. There has been no discussion or guidance as to the closing of school for the remainder of the year. As hope springs eternal, we are still operating on the premise that schools will reopen at some certain point this year. We continue to look forward to returning to school and returning to normalcy.

AHLA supports plan to add funds for small business loans, seeks additional action to protect hotel jobs

The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) expressed support for plans by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker Nancy Pelosi to provide an additional $250 billion in loans for small businesses. In a letter sent to congressional leadership today, AHLA urged Congress to make several updates to the CARES Act in addition to increasing the funding. AHLA also sent an urgent letter to the Federal Reserve and Treasury seeking action to prevent thousands of hotel properties from going into foreclosure.

Facing an unprecedented spike in unemployment insurance applications related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the New York State Department of Labor and the New York State Office of Information Technology Services today announced a "tech surge" in partnership with Google Cloud, Deloitte and Verizon to improve the reliability of the state's online and telephone-based unemployment insurance application systems. The "tech surge" will include critical upgrades to the Department of Labor's technology systems that will increase its capacity to accept and process applications, making it easier for New Yorkers to apply for benefits.

Poloncarz issues emergency order on use of face masks

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz on Thursday issued a local emergency order regarding the usage of face coverings and masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended wearing cloth face coverings that cover the nose and mouth in order to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus as an additional public health measure along with social distancing, frequent hand washing, and other preventive actions.
