Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Wednesday announced that, beginning Thursday, May 21, religious gatherings of no more than 10 people will be allowed statewide where strict social distancing measures are enforced and all participants wear masks. Additionally, drive-in and parking lot services will also be allowed beginning Thursday.

May 18, 2020, marked a new day for public health in New York state. Per a new law passed earlier this year, sales of tobacco and vapor products are now prohibited in pharmacies. With new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showing staggering job loss to the hospitality and leisure industry, the American Hotel & Lodging Association today released a "Roadmap to Recovery," calling on Congress to prioritize relief for hotel workers and small businesses in the next stimulus package. The April Jobs Report showed the hospitality and leisure industry was the hardest hit, losing 7.7 million jobs - nearly as many jobs as the next four sectors combined.

The New York State Department of Labor on Wednesday announced the backlog of pending unemployment benefit applications has been reduced to 7,580 - representing what it called "major progress since an unprecedented crush of applications related to the COVID-19 pandemic flooded the DOL's systems in March." This universe of unprocessed applications includes those that are missing critical information and cannot be processed, duplicates, and abandoned claims. Additionally, since the passage of the Federal CARES Act, 562,766 pandemic unemployment assistance applicants have received unemployment benefits.

Jericho Road Community Health Center has opened its fourth health center in the City of Buffalo, located in the Buffalo City Mission's new community center, the Alfiero Family Center for Hope and Promise. Located at 100 E. Tupper St., the clinic was developed in partnership with the City Mission as part of its $15 million center - scheduled to open later this fall to the whole community.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a collaboration with the Greater New York Hospital Association and the Healthcare Association of New York State to implement a two-week hospital visitation pilot program in 16 hospitals across the state - including Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center - to allow increased visitations for family members and loved ones. As part of the pilot program, visits will be time limited. Visitors will be provided with and must wear PPE and are subject to symptom and temperature checks.

CBS recently announced the addition of the broadcast television premiere of "Grease Sing-A-Long" to Sunday Night Movies, which features iconic films from the Paramount Pictures library, broadcast on the CBS Television Network. On Monday, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced the state is bringing in international experts to help advise the state's reopening plan. Dr. Michael T. Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota and Dr. Samir Bhatt, senior lecturer at Imperial College London, will work with the state to provide technical advice and analyze data/metrics throughout the state's reopening process and help track the state's progress.
