A statement from Public Defender Nicholas Robinson:
"On May 1, the Niagara County Public Defender's Office furloughed 15 assistant public defenders due to the closing of the courts related to the COVID-19 pandemic. That left the office with 10 attorneys to handle the incoming, and significantly reduced, workload.
"In anticipation of the phased reopening of the courts, we have decided the time is right to recall those 15 assistant public defenders. While courts across the county will not be immediately resuming regular schedules, we want our team engaged with their clients and fully prepared to defend their rights when court proceedings resume."
