Higgins announces federal grant for D'Youville College nursing program

As Western New York continues to battle the novel coronavirus, Congressman Brian Higgins joined D'Youville College in announcing a federal grant for the college's nursing program. Allocated by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the grant will give D'Youville $707,983 to help address a shortage of faculty available to educate future nurses.

Secretary to the Governor Melissa DeRosa on Thursday issued a report to Gov. Andrew Cuomo outlining the COVID-19 domestic violence task force's initial recommendations to reimagine New York's approach to services for domestic violence survivors. Cuomo has accepted these recommendations in full and is directing the Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, along with other sister agencies of the Office of Children and Family Services, the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, the Office of Victim Services, the Division of Criminal Justice Services and the Department of Health, to use these recommendations to update and improve domestic violence services in New York.

Earlier this week, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson announced the allocation of $2.96 billion in Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) funding to support homeless Americans and individuals at risk of becoming homeless because of hardships such as job loss, wage reduction, or illness due to COVID-19. This funding is in addition to $1 billion of ESG grants announced within a week of President Donald Trump signing the CARES Act.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Small Business Administration announced it's launching its first online Veteran Entrepreneurial Training and Resource Network (VETRN) Streetwise MBA program to New York veteran small business owners and their immediate families beginning in August. Schumer and Congressman Brian Higgins announced Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center will receive $600,456 in federal funding to expand telehealth services to Western New Yorkers. The funding, included by Congress in the CARES Act, is distributed through the Federal Communication Commission's COVID-19 telehealth program. Both Schumer and Higgins reached out to the FCC to advocate on behalf of Roswell Park.

The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum is holding a curbside Chiavetta's chicken dinner pickup from 3-7 p.m. Friday, June 26. Dinners are $12 each in advance, and include the famous Chiavetta's chicken, potato salad, coleslaw and a roll. A portion of each dinner sold will help the museum to make up lost admissions income from the three months the museum was required to close due to COVID-19.

The university said it is the first in the country to provide this clean-sleep solution, which was made available by Spry Therapeutics, a health and wellness technology company owned by brothers and NU alumni Bill and Bob Purdy.
