Hotel industry & union join to urge Congress for aid

The American Hotel & Lodging Association and UNITE HERE, the largest hospitality workers union in North America, joined forces to call on Congress to pass the Save Hotel Jobs Act. AHLA said, "The bill, introduced by U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) and U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.), provides a lifeline to hotel workers, providing the assistance they need to survive until travel returns to prepandemic levels."

On March 31, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation legalizing adult use of cannabis throughout New York. During the announcement, Cuomo said the development of an adult-use cannabis industry in New York has, "The potential to create significant economic opportunities for New Yorkers and the state." Its estimated the industry could bring in $350 million in tax revenue each year and potentially create 30,000 to 60,000 jobs.

A site plan from Stavatti Aerospace Ltd. to begin initial construction and repairs at the former Army Reserve base located in the municipality was approved by both the Town of Niagara and Niagara County planning boards last week. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced New York state will provide 1,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses and establish a new pop-up site targeting 16- to 25-year-olds in Buffalo. He also announced the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority will provide 1,000 day passes to help eligible residents reach the pop-up site.

Anaheim Ducks goaltender Ryan Miller on Thursday announced his retirement from the National Hockey League at the conclusion of the 2020-21 season. Miller will retire as the all-time leader among U.S.-born goaltenders in wins (current numbers) with 390, second in shutouts (44) and games played (794). Throughout his illustrious career, Miller is the only player in hockey history to be named the top goaltender in the NCAA, American Hockey League, Winter Olympics and the NHL.

Genesis to perform in Buffalo

On Thursday, Genesis announced their highly anticipated return to North America for the first time in 14 years with "The Last Domino?" tour dates that will have Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford playing major cities across the U.S. and Canada this November and December. Kicking off at Chicago's United Center on Nov. 15, the group will be joined by Nic Collins on drums, and the band's long-time lead guitar and bass player Daryl Stuermer.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced the Restaurant Revitalization Fund will begin accepting applications at noon Monday, May 3. The program, funded through the American Rescue Plan and run by the Small Business Administration (SBA), will provide struggling restaurants with federal COVID-19 relief. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced New York state will adopt the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's new guidance on mask use for fully vaccinated people. The guidelines state fully vaccinated people - defined as two or more weeks after receiving the second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine - no longer need to wear masks outdoors, except in certain crowded settings and venues.
