Service clubs sound off at Wheatfield Lions' 5th annual event

The Wheatfield Lions Club invited their counterparts, the St. David Lions Club from Canada; as well as area service and business groups to a steak dinner at Five Senses Nature Park for their fifth annual Service Club Steak Night. Clubs included the Niagara-Wheatfield Kiwanis, Wheatfield Business Association, Town of Niagara Lions, and the Niagara County Central Rotary Club.

The Kenmore West Blue Devils Varsity boys team was defeated by narrow margin to the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks in the first game of the season. The sole goal scored over all 80 minutes was made on a penalty kick by Tyler MacNeil.

It started nine years ago when Jesse Gooch, owner of Painters Plus and a Niagara County legislator, decided to use his business to do some good for the community. Gooch noticed there were several houses in the community that needed an exterior paint job. Painters Plus handled jobs on similar houses and it was like a lightbulb went on. Gooch's business had all the supplies and the know-how to paint any of these houses.

During the recent United Way "Day of Caring," M&T Bank showed its hometown pride by again having the largest representation of volunteers - approximately 450 employees across 21 job sites, representing nearly 14% of the total "Day of Caring" volunteer force. During the day's activities, Buffalo Bills legends Jim Kelly and Darryl Talley made guest appearances as a special "thank you" to M&T and other volunteer groups.
Old Fort Niagara site of naturalization ceremony

A naturalization ceremony took place Wednesday morning at Old Fort Niagara for 20 new U.S. citizens. Individuals from 11 different countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, Canada, China, Congo (Kinshasa), Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Liberia and Vietnam, took their oaths of allegiance from U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer, U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York.

More than two people are killed every day on U.S. roads by impatient and reckless drivers blowing through red lights, according to data analysis performed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The most recent crash data available shows 939 people were killed in red-light-running crashes in 2017 - a 10-year high and a 28% increase since 2012.

The Lower Niagara Community Survivors group will hold its second annual "RockOut Cancer" fundraising event from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Lewiston Stone House, 755 Center St. Admission to the all-day event includes food donated from the Stone House, Gallo Coal Fire Kitchen, Casa Antica and the Brickyard Brewing Co. This summer, five teams of University at Buffalo students who didn't know each other from Adam came together in a startup boot camp to develop a medical device to solve the devastating and costly surgical complication of anastomotic leaks. Such leaks, occurring after some colorectal surgeries, are difficult to detect early. The consequences are severe: an ostomy bag, sepsis or even death.
