On Monday, the Wheatfield Town board announced that, although the municipality elected not to opt out of New York State Cannabis Law Section 131 - which would have flatly prevented marijuana retail sales and on-site consumption establishments from operating - due to a lack of specifics from the state. It will go forward with its own regulations regarding where and how such establishments could operate.

This alert, her office stated, "comes in light of a surge of COVID-19 cases due to the omicron variant, which has resulted in the rise of New Yorkers seeking to use at-home testing kits before gathering with friends and loved ones for the holidays."

The highly transmissible omicron variant of the novel coronavirus has been detected in Erie County, University at Buffalo scientists and Erie County health officials reported Wednesday.
