The Tool Library announced it will be putting its tools and volunteers to work with a new calendar of community service events, on April 23 and 30 and May 7, 14, 21 and 28. Organizers said, "Each of the six service events provide an opportunity to beautify, strengthen and contribute to the WNY community through direct, hands-on action."

The Village of Lewiston announced the next phase of rebuilding Center Street will commence Monday, May 2. Milling is scheduled to take place for a week, followed by a week of paving.

As I am writing this column, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Western New York, according to AAA, is $4.24 a gallon. One year ago, that same gallon of gas cost $2.86. Clearly, the rise in gas prices, and the overall inflation of prices on everything, is hitting the wallets of families across Niagara County.

The continuing battle against sea lampreys soon will come to locations in the local area. A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service assessment crew will conduct work in the Niagara River (Erie and Niagara counties) May 10-19 to estimate the abundance of sea lampreys. The information gathered will be used to determine the need for sea lamprey control.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service personnel will apply lampricides to Cattaraugus Creek in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Erie counties to kill sea lamprey larvae burrowed in the stream bottom. The applications will be conducted between May 10-19, in accordance with state of New York permits. Applications will be complete in about five days. Application dates are tentative and may change based upon local weather or stream conditions near the time of treatment.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday announced $2.6 million in funding provided by the FY 2023 enacted budget to support the Holocaust Survivors Initiative. This funding, to be administered by New York State Office for the Aging, will be used to increase access to health care-related services, provided by community-based organizations for those who suffered in the Holocaust.

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced more than $6.3 million in federal funding that will allow seven programs in Brooklyn and Manhattan and Albany, Erie and Onondaga counties to expand their anti-gun violence work and increase services for victims and families.

In August 2013, Lewiston resident Angelo Sarkees put into action an idea he had for some time. A recent retiree, Sarkees began collecting bottles and cans at the Lewiston Jazz Festival, with the idea of turning them in to raise funds for local Niagara County food pantries. So began his "Deposits 4 Food" initiative.

Destination Niagara USA is set to host a group of top outdoor media professionals for the Greater Niagara Spring Outdoor Media event, May 1-6. This popular event has been held for more than two decades, and highlights the fisheries of Lake Erie, the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. Anglers will target species including smallmouth bass, walleye, trout and salmon using a variety of fishing methods.
