NCDOH joins cooperative effort to wipe out terrestrial rabies

The Niagara County Department of Health environmental division is part of a collaborative effort to prevent the spread of rabies in the Western New York region through dissemination of oral rabies vaccine. The ORV project is led by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

The New York State Division of Consumer Protection warned New Yorkers of a text phishing scheme targeting cell phone users with an attempt to steal their information. Fraudsters are impersonating financial institutions claiming that a customer's account is compromised "due to unusual activity," but the message is an attempt to deceive the recipient into sharing personal information.

Erie County delivers harm reduction supplies & materials to local restaurants, bars

The Erie County Department of Health and Erie County Opiate Epidemic Task Force have expanded a campaign to distribute harm reduction materials and supplies. ECDOH has contacted restaurants and bars, starting in the City of Buffalo, to offer Narcan kits and branded materials with harm reduction messages at no cost. Outreach to the rest of Erie County will continue this summer.
NCSO: Industrial accident in Wheatfield

On Wednesday, just before 2 a.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call regarding a hazardous material incident at the Avantor building in the Town of Wheatfield. The caller reported a spill of approximately 400 gallons of methanol contained inside the building.

No members of the public were in attendance Tuesday when a hearing was held regarding a request made by the Frontier House owners for a payment in lieu of taxes from the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency. NCIDA Assistant Director Andrea Klyczek closed the meeting just two minutes after making her introductory remarks.

Sheila Strott, an incoming freshman in Niagara University's College of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism Management, is the 2022 recipient of the Merani scholarship, a collaboration between Niagara and the Merani Hotel Group to provide opportunities for high-level experiential learning in the hospitality industry. Strott, a Grand Island resident who graduated from Mount St. Mary Academy in June, will receive a four-year, $30,000 scholarship, and three paid rotating internships at Merani properties.

The heat of summer is here, and this weekend is expected to be another hot one. AAA Western and Central New York is reminding motorists to be aware of the dangers of hot cars. Since 1998, 917 children have died from pediatric vehicular heatstroke, including at least 10 deaths already reported this year in the U.S. While an overwhelming majority of these deaths are accidental, such tragedies are often preventable.
