Grand Island Memorial Library celebrates reading programs

On Aug. 12, children and adults gathered at a tent next to the Grand Island Memorial Library to celebrate the end of the summer reading programs with ice cream and with crafts, and with drawings for prizes. They also had the opportunity to talk to Marissa Ries and James Peterson from Spectrum Health about a program called NY Project Hope that provides information, education, emotional support, and links to resources.
Golden Age Center plans pop-up pantry

The Golden Age Center announced it will hold a pop-up pantry, called "Seniors helping Seniors," from 9-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31 - or "until our supplies run out," said Jennifer Menter, recreation supervisor.

Jim and Mary Pinckney both experienced the challenge of living with a spouse who had dementia. Jim's first wife, Elaine, was diagnosed with frontal lobe dementia at the age of 60. Seven years later, she passed away. Mary's first husband, Larry, passed away at 72 after a long bout with Alzheimer's.
NFPD investigating shooting

Shortly after 1 a.m. this morning, the Niagara Falls Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the 400 block of Ninth Street. Upon arrival, the officers found a 30-year-old male with a gunshot wound. Police immediately began to render aid to the victim before he was transported to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Once there, he was pronounced deceased.
Beat the heat at City of Buffalo's splash pads & indoor pools

Now that repairs have been completed on the Allison Park Splash Pad, located at 38 Rees St., all 11 city splash pads are available for cooling off and relaxing. The splash pads are open every day, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., through Labor Day, weather permitting.

Gov. Kathy Hochul today announced the New York State Division of Human Rights has awarded more than $2.3 million in the past year to 126 women who filed sex discrimination claims against employers, landlords and businesses across the state. In addition, the division has published new guidance on workplace protections against pregnancy discrimination.
DEC begins emergency clean-up response to coal tar discharges to Scajaquada Creek Harbor from pumphouse

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced today that DEC's spill response unit is beginning work to contain and eliminate coal tar and other hazardous substances from entering the lower section of Scajaquada Creek from a pumphouse at Niagara Street near Scajaquada Creek's outlet to the Black Rock Canal in Buffalo.

NYS: $4 million to increase mental health workforce diversity
