"Reelin' for a Cure" is returning to Olcott and Wilson harbors from 6 a.m. to noon Friday, Aug. 19. In its seventh year, the fishing tournament will host hundreds of women angling for prize money, bragging rights and the opportunity to raise money for women battling cancer.

Did you know about 62% of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood? But, only about 3% does. By making an appointment to help save lives with the American Red Cross in August, donors can pump up the blood supply and keep it from falling to shortage levels. Platelet donors are especially needed now.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced a wetland restoration project will begin at Woodlawn Beach State Park in Erie County this fall. The $1.6 million project is being funded through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

Today's national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $4.06, down 15 cents from one week ago. One year ago, the price was $3.19. The New York state average is $4.43, down 9 cents since last Monday. A year ago, the NYS average was $3.22.

For 26 years, he built kayaks and canoes, some from kits and some not, from cedar plywood and from cedar strips. He also paddled those boats in Paddles Up at Beaver Island State Park and elsewhere.

Ecotour highlights diversity of species in Niagara River Corridor

A wind blew across the water at Beaver Island State Park at 7 a.m., July 30. I stepped into a kayak for the first ecotour of the 2022 Paddles Up event at the park's beach and was pushed off. The water was slightly choppy as the group of kayakers, led by retired government biologist Paul Leuchner, started to travel in the river, heading around the island.

Just as most cars need to be refueled constantly, so does the nation's blood supply. The American Red Cross has faced a concerning drop in blood and platelet donations this summer. Donors are needed to make an appointment to give in August to help prevent a blood shortage.
