Amberleigh Retirement Community celebrating silver anniversary

Amberleigh is celebrating 25 years of excellence in caring for seniors at its silver anniversary party. The Oct. 25 event runs from 2-4 p.m. at 2330 Maple Road, Williamsville, and the public is invited. Champagne and refreshments will be served.

Dr. Barry Weinstein (Amherst supervisor) and Assemblyman Ray Walters will be presenting proclamations. All attendees will be entered in anniversary drawings to win a full day at Excuria Salon with lunch, or a four-hour limousine service for eight from Aces Limousine Service. Tours will also be given.

Lewiston No. 1 fund drive a hit

Lewiston Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 is wrapping up its annual fund drive. This year, the company awarded a large-screen TV in a random drawing of all entries. Patricia Rose of Lewiston was the winner and is shown as Chief John Penzotti presents her with the TV.

Reid Capizzi, pictured, infant son of Mike and Laura Suess-Capizzi of Lewiston, has been selected as the baby who will be part of the dramatic re-enactment that will take place during the unveiling of the Tuscarora Heroes Monument on Dec. 19. The re-enactment will depict the burning of Lewiston by the British in 1813, when Lewiston citizens ran for their lives down Center Street to escape.

DEC finds air quality around Peace Bridge is similar to other areas in the city

Air monitoring conducted on the west side of Buffalo, near the U.S. Peace Bridge Plaza, indicates that air quality in this area is consistent with levels in the city overall and meets federal standards, according to a study released by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The study is the first phase of the Air Quality Study of the Impact of the Peace Bridge Plaza on the Surrounding Neighborhood, which will assess changes in air quality associated with the redesign of the Peace Bridge Plaza and access to I-190.

Schneiderman launches effort to ensure military veterans of recent wars receive full tax benefits

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has announced a new effort to ensure all U.S. military veterans receive state property tax exemptions to which they are legally entitled under New York law. Schneiderman's office learned some veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were being wrongly denied a valuable property tax exemption to which they are entitled upon conclusion of their military service.

Leading a coalition of seven states, New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has announced the filing of a lawsuit against the federal Environmental Protection Agency for allegedly violating the Clean Air Act by failing to adequately limit air pollution emissions from new residential wood heaters. In the legal papers, Schneiderman's coalition contends the EPA's existing emissions limits, which haven't been revised in 25 years, are outdated and leave out popular types of residential wood heaters - including outdoor wood boilers, which have proliferated in many areas of New York.

The University at Buffalo Center for Assistive Technology has received a $ 4.7 million competitive award from the U.S. Department of Education's National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitative Research.

The 2013-18 award was announced as CAT celebrates its 25th anniversary and brings the total amount of extramural support generated by the center to about $100 million since its founding in 1988.
