Charles Smilinich, age 92, of Colden, formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at his residence, after a long illness.
Born in Tonawanda, he was the son of the late Michael and Katharina Smilinich and had been a resident of Grand Island for the greater part of his life. An Army veteran of World War II, he had been involved in the building trades and operated Charles Smilinich Concrete Waterproofing on Grand Island for many years until his retirement.
He was the husband of 72 years of the late Ann (nee Martineck) Smilinich, who died earlier this year, and brother of the late Andrew Smilinich and Mildred Magaris.
He is survived by his four children, Judy (Ronald) Blain, Michael (Nancy) Smilinich, Susan Lehsten, and Debra (Dan) Burandt; a brother, Branko (Doris) Sedlacek; and two sisters, Helen (Albert) Fadell and Draga Swagel. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Hamp Funeral Home Inc., 37 Adam St. at Seymour, Tonawanda, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Friends are invited; interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. If desired, memorials to Hospice Buffalo are preferred by the family.
