Regis Philbin announced today that he will be retiring from the very successful, long-running talk show "LIVE! with Regis and Kelly." Philbin made the announcement live on-air this morning during the Host Chat portion of the show.

Newfane American Legion Post No. 873 reports the American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary will soon be interviewing high school junior boys and girls for the Boys' and Girls' State. Boys' State is at Morrisville State College in Morrisville. Girls' State is at Brockport State College and is during the last week of June.

Edward and Diane Finkbeiner will continue to own and operate the Barton Hill Hotel & Spa in Lewiston under the terms of an agreement reached Thursday in a special term of the New York State Supreme Court. Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. denied a request by CIT Lending Services Corporation/Iddleson Group to place the four-story Center Street hotel in receivership provided the Finkbeiners pay $30,000 in past-due mortgage payments on the 13th of each month.

Members of the Jack Beatty Hospice Memorial Regatta and Hospice Dash committees presented Niagara Hospice with $29,000 in proceeds from their Niagara River Boat Cruise and Clambake that took place in July at the Youngstown Yacht Club and the 5K Run/Walk in September at Porter on the Lake.

At its Jan. 6 reorganization meeting, the Lewiston Town Board opted for a new direction in the assessor's office. The change comes following last month's resignation letter by Acting Assessor Gene J. Virtuoso, who since 2005 has been serving in that role on a part-time basis. "I am submitting my resignation as part-time Acting Assessor effective Jan. 5, 2011 due to personal reasons," wrote Virtuoso on Dec. 10, 2010, to Supervisor Steve Reiter and Town Board members.

Artpark is seeking local schools, Scout groups, regional artists, and families to create fairy houses for display at Artpark's new "Fairy House Festival" on June 5. The "Fairy House Festival" will feature a tour of fairy houses throughout the woods and gardens of the park, a book signing by children's book author Tracy Kane, art activities and other "natural" fun for families to enjoy. Grand Island High School was the overall winner of the 2011 Tech Wars competition held on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Niagara County Community College. The Vikings won for the second consecutive year with 49 points, finishing ahead of 2009 champion Lockport, which had 27 final points. Tonawanda City and Williamsville tied for third place with 22 points.

The Niagara County Industrial Development Agency announced this week it has accepted applications for assistance from Hamilton, Ontario-based HT Production for a proposed corrugated box manufacturing facility in Lewiston, Wheatfield Family Density for the construction for a new dental office, as well as the construction of a new medical practice building in the Town of Newfane. The projects total more than $2 million in investment in Niagara County and the creation of 20 full time jobs and nine part-time positions.
