U.S. Coast Guard Niagara pays tribute to servicemen

This past Wednesday, U.S. Coast Guard Station Niagara paid tribute to two fellow servicemen who lost their lives on March 24, 2011, when they were ejected from a 21-foot Station Niagara boat while on patrol along the U.S.-Canadian border in Lake Ontario.

The event includes an evening of live music, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a silent auction followed by a sit-down dinner and awards program. Girasole, a principal with Brisbane Consulting Group in Buffalo, has been chosen to serve on the New York State Board of Real Estate Appraisal. This panel oversees the activities of all real estate appraisers across the state, setting policy, monitoring Department of State appraisal activities, reviewing licensing applications, and adjudicating complaints.
RRG recipient of $5,500 grant from Freshwater Future

The Porter citizens environmental group Residents for Responsible Government announced this week it was awarded a $5,500 grant from Freshwater Future. Geared for the protection of the watershed in Niagara County, the $5,500 grant is to help RRG organize community opposition to any expansion of the Chemical Waste Management hazardous waste landfill in the Town of Porter, said Wendy Swearingen, RRG president.
Tops Xpress hosts grand opening

Anthony DiMino cut the ribbon Monday morning for the grand opening of Tops Xpress at 845 Cayuga St., in the Village of Lewiston. In attendance was DiMino's family, as well as Lewiston officials. Mayor Terry Collesano, government leaders and members of the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce were present as DiMino announced the opening of the fuel and convenience station.

A controversial land transfer in the Village of Lewiston was not unconstitutional. So said State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. on Thursday, as he ruled in favor of the municipality and its deeding over of 197.23 feet of Water Street property to Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours and its president, John Kinney, for $1. Kloch said the sale, coupled with potential insurance savings, was adequate consideration.

At 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, Kelsey L. Wright was reported missing by her mother. The 15-year-old was last seen in the Wheatfield/North-Tonawanda area at about 5 p.m. on Monday, March 14. She was wearing a dark-hooded sweatshirt and a pair of jeans.
