A small molecule may help reduce damage in aging-related heart attacks

A small molecule developed at Yale University to limit damage done by ischemia - restricted blood flow - during heart attacks or surgery has been shown to reduce by 40 percent the amount of heart muscle damaged by myocardial infarction in animal studies by University at Buffalo pharmacologists.

Orleans/Niagara BOCES will start its fall driver and traffic education course on Monday, Sept. 16. The program is being offered at the Orleans/Niagara BOCES Conference Center in Sanborn and Medina High School to all students who are 16 years of age as of Sept. 16, and who possess a valid state permit and a 48-hour course to learn how to drive responsibly.

Anthony L. Picone, M.D., Ph.D., MBA, cardiothoracic surgeon in the department of thoracic surgery, has been named medical director of Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Picone has been employed at Roswell Park since April of 2009, and for the past six months has served as RPCI's interim medical director.
