The New York State Gaming Commission's Division of Lottery on Tuesday renewed its appeal to "gift responsibly" this holiday season; advising last-minute holiday shoppers to avoid gifting lottery tickets to those under the legal purchase age. New York Attorney General Barbara D. Underwood announced a record $174.2 million consumer fraud settlement with Charter Communications Inc. and Spectrum Management Holding Company (together "Charter") for defrauding internet subscribers. The $62.5 million in direct refunds to consumers alone are believed to represent the largest-ever payout to consumers by an internet service provider (ISP) in U.S. history.

Only five evenings remain to experience the Fairgrounds Festival of Lights at the Erie County Fairgrounds in Hamburg. Beginning Wednesday, Dec. 19, the festival will feature an expanded schedule. Gates will be open from 5-9 p.m. (through Sunday, Dec. 23), with the buildings and grounds staying open until 10 p.m.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital and its Neighborhood Health Center conducted its fifth annual "Christmas Shoppe" on Saturday, and provided assistance to more than 110 families and 285 children. The initiative is coordinated by Sr. Nora Sweeney, D.C., community social worker at the Neighborhood Health Center.
