The Buffalo Sabres have announced the roster for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres 12U hockey team that will compete at the 55th Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament from Feb. 12-23, 2014, at Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec.

The team, created specifically to participate in the annual 11-day tournament held each February in Quebec City, is comprised of players who reside in the Western New York and Central New York regions.

The tournament, commonly referred to as the "Pee-Wee World Championship," is the oldest and most prestigious youth hockey tournament in the world.

Cuomo announces re-opening of Prospect Point at Niagara Falls State Park

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the completion of Phase 1 of the restoration of Prospect Point, which is one of the most popular areas of Niagara Falls State Park. The ribbon-cutting took place at the same time that ground was broken for Phase 2 of the restoration project. The project is part of Governor Cuomo's NY Works program.

"Niagara Falls State Park is one of Western New York's most valuable tourism assets - a stunning natural wonder that attracts millions of visitors from all across the world each year," Cuomo said. "Under our NY Works program, we have completed the first phase of restoring Prospect Point as part of an ongoing project to improve the state park and enhance the experience of those who come to visit. Coupled with our efforts to revitalize the community of Niagara Falls, this investment in the park will help attract more visitors, boost tourism in the whole region, and grow the local economy."

Roswell Park researchers receive almost $7 million in grant support for cancer research efforts

Roswell Park Cancer Institute is proud to announce several faculty members have collectively received more than $6.7 million in grant funding from federal agencies and other sources. These awards help fund important research that aims to develop new approaches to prevent and treat cancer and to improve RPCI patients' quality of life. Of those, Kelvin P. Lee, M.D., chair of the department of immunology, received three grants totaling more than $3.9 million.

Two grants are from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. They will help fund Lee's work in immunology. One is a four-year award for $2.02 million that will aid exploration of how immune responses occur and what molecular pathways are involved.

Lee Foundation makes $600,000 gift to UB to support schizophrenia research

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has announced New York has joined with other states and the federal government in a $1.6 billion settlement resolving civil and criminal allegations that Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., promoted the sale and use of Risperdal and Invega for uses not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and introduced Risperdal and Invega into interstate commerce.

It was a beautiful fall morning when the lives of Carmen Presti and his wife, Christie, would change forever. The caregivers and "parents" of Charlie the Chimp were by his side day and night during the last days of his life before his passing on Nov. 4 at the home of The Primate Sanctuary in Niagara Falls.
