Wallace to run for supervisor in Town of Niagara

Lee S. Wallace has announced his candidacy for supervisor in the Town of Niagara.

Wallace is a lifetime resident of the town and an employee for more than 40 years, currently serving as town recreation director.

Wallace, a registered Democrat, stated, "I am truly excited about the opportunity to once again serve the people of the Town of Niagara. My experience in town government gives me the credentials, leadership and understanding needed to provide the services the public requires."

The election will be Nov. 4 for the supervisor seat.

National Cancer Institute names Roswell Park 'outstanding'

The National Cancer Institute has renewed the coveted and prestigious Cancer Center Support Grant to Roswell Park Cancer Institute following an in-depth peer review by cancer experts from around the U.S.

The NCI rated Roswell Park's application as "outstanding." The awarding of this noteworthy designation extends Roswell Park's world-class status as an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center - the only one in upstate New York, and one of only 41 in the entire U.S.

Catholic Charities exceeds 2014 goal

Catholic Charities of Buffalo officials announced Monday the 2014 appeal exceeded its $10.8 million goal, with cash and pledges received to date totaling $11,001,057.29.

Richard J. Malone, Bishop of Buffalo, thanked all donors and supporters for helping Catholic Charities to accomplish such an ambitious goal in order to continue serving those in need throughout the eight-county Diocese of Buffalo.

"As a result of the incredible generosity of the Western New York community, I have the great joy of announcing we have met, and surpassed, our goal again this year," Malone said.

Those pigs were good for you; that hot dog, slit down the middle, cheese laid neatly in, then wrapped in bacon, grilled, then placed neatly into a nice fresh bun - that all had to be good for you.
DEC announces proposed rule changes for new crossbow hunting law

With new state legislation authorizing the Department of Environmental Conservation to allow the taking of big game (deer and bear) or small game by the use of a crossbow at certain times and places in New York, DEC is now accepting public comment on proposed regulation changes so crossbows may be a legal implement for the fall 2014 hunting seasons.

Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame induction dinner set for Oct. 16

The Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame will induct its 12-member class of 2014, Thursday, Oct. 16, at its annual induction ceremony and dinner. The event will be held for the first time ever at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.

The cash bar reception begins at 5 p.m. with a silent auction of sports memorabilia. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m., followed by the induction ceremony. Proceeds from the dinner and the auction benefit the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame amateur sports development fund.

Grisanti, Ryan: State construction grant for Hamburg Public Library

New York State Sen. Mark Grisanti and New York State Assemblyman Sean Ryan announced the Hamburg Public Library will receive a New York State Library Construction Grant of $449,399. Funding for this grant was included in the state budget passed earlier this year.

Libraries across the state applied for competitive construction grants that could fund up to 75 percent of the cost for a project. The minimum grant award was $2,500. The funding is awarded by the New York State Department of Education, Division of Library Development.
