'Tonawanda Rails to Trails' project set to connect communities

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined Wednesday by Erie County Legislator Peter Savage (3rd District), Town of Tonawanda Supervisor Anthony Caruana, Mayor of the City of Tonawanda Rick Davis, elected officials, representatives of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority and New York State Department of Transportation, and residents to review the "Tonawanda Rails to Trails" project, a four-mile-long connecting trail that runs from Kenmore Avenue in the Town of Tonawanda to State Street in the City of Tonawanda.

Panepinto looks to just transition funding in wake of Huntley announcement

State Sen. Marc Panepinto expressed concern in the wake of NRG Energy's announcement Tuesday that it will shutter the Huntley Station power plant early next year. Located in the Town of Tonawanda, the plant employs 79 and provides millions in PILOT payments to the Kenmore-Tonawanda School District, Town of Tonawanda and Erie County.

Nearly 200 participated in the seventh annual Jonathon Cote Memorial Motorcycle Ride & Fundraiser, held in Erie and Niagara counties Aug. 2. It is presented each year in memory of Cote, a U.S. Army veteran. He served in Middle East conflicts in the early 2000s and returned as a contractor to Iraq only to be held captive and later killed in 2008.
