Sports teams in their first year have their struggles at times. Unless you're the Vegas Golden Knights and reach the Stanley Cup Finals in your first season, most teams see varied success. For the Niagara Power of the New York Collegiate Baseball League, it may not be their first year in existence, but it's their inaugural season under the direction of Niagara University.

Beyond what it already does for Niagara County, Community Missions of Niagara Frontier is literally taking a step toward serving its community - several steps, in fact. On Saturday, May 5, the organization will host its annual "Walk for Niagara" at Whirlpool State Park in Niagara Falls. The event helps to raise awareness and funds for the nonprofit organization's crisis and community service programs that provide clothing, food, shelter and other services to those in need.

Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour has announced the new addition to the sheriff's office canine team has been named in honor of Chief Craig C. Harmon, who was the chief of the Niagara County Drug Task Force when he passed away in 2004. The new canine, Chief, is currently in training with handler Deputy Richard Bull. He was purchased through many generous donations and funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Lewiston's Memorial Day Remembrance Committee met Thursday at the Veterans Memorial in Academy Park, the site of the upcoming Memorial Day Ceremony. Members brought the honors banner from the 2017 event and said they were very pleased to note last year's great sponsors have all signed up again to support this community event again in 2018.

A "must-do" summer event for so many, the annual Jack Beatty Memorial Hospice Cruise and Clambake is scheduled for Friday, July 13, at the historic Youngstown Yacht Club. The 19th annual event will take place rain or shine. Members of the Youngstown Yacht Club, along with other skippers from around Western New York, will once again donate their boats and time to take cruise participants for a afternoon sail up the Niagara River.

Hundreds of gowns were donated Saturday during the first Colvin Cleaners "Gowns for Prom" gown drive at the three Reeds Jenss locations. The drive was held to fulfill a need for more gowns for the 13th annual program, which is presented by the Allstate Foundation and supported by WKSE "KISS" 98.5-AM and on-air personality Janet Snyder.

The Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG) and Canalside announced the 2018 GlassBarge tour will visit Buffalo, docking at Canalside on Aug. 3-5. The 2018 Appeal for Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Buffalo is underway. The Most Rev. Richard J. Malone, bishop of Buffalo, was joined by Catholic Charities of Buffalo officials and volunteer leaders Wednesday at the organization's new Women, Infants and Children (WIC) site on Harlem Road to launch the 94th annual campaign.

The Neptune Water Ski Club held their annual New Year's Day event in the Niagara River at Lewiston. They had to break ice out of the boat launch to get the ski boat in the water, and then had to ski around the ice flows in the river.

Mountains of pillows and a roomful of toiletries greeted Passage House Domestic Violence Services staff when they arrived at the City of Niagara Falls Department of Public Works on Monday afternoon. For the past six weeks, United Steelworkers Local No. 9434 and Women of Steel have collected shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, body wash, combs, pillows and sheets for the Family & Children's Service of Niagara program. Most items were purchased and donated, while others were handmade and personally delivered.
