Ten-year-old Quinn Miller is an ambitious lad. He's been delivering The Sentinel for two years with the help of his mom, Meg. This year he decided to "up his game" and added the duty of collecting empty bottles and cans from the clients along his route.

Organizers of the Youngstown/Town of Porter Community Holiday Baskets Program report this year's campaign was "a great success" with 49 needy families and 106 children assisted for Christmas.

DiMino Lewiston Tops owner Anthony DiMino is no stranger to giving. He has been featured often in this newspaper for his donations to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce and local anglers. This week, he and his store went above and beyond, donating $15,000 to the Salvation Army for Christmas. Volunteers have been manning the red kettle during the holiday season.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post 7487 teamed with Lewiston's Deal Realty and other volunteers (including Assemblyman Angelo Morinello) to present holiday presents to 50 youth from the Niagara Falls Boys & Girls Club and Tuscarora Indian Elementary School.

The annual Tuscarora Heroes Remembrance ceremony was held Saturday, Dec. 19, the 207th anniversary of the Tuscarora's brave actions that saved the lives of Lewiston citizens who were fleeing British forces who had invaded the U.S. from Canada.

Mount St. Mary's Neighborhood Health Center (NHC) held its seventh annual Christmas Shoppe on Saturday, Dec. 12. Because of the pandemic, things looked a lot different this year, however, it didn't stop the amazing community of donors from helping to provide gifts to 398 children from 198 families!

Members of the Youngstown Recreation Commission and their families hope to bring more holiday spirit to the local community. Saturday, Dec. 12, had been the scheduled date for the annual Youngstown "Christmas in the Village" and children's Christmas party, where the Recreation Commission would have offered Santa visits, cookie decorating and holiday crafts.

Though Erie County has made statewide headlines over the past month for its high number of coronavirus cases, more attention is starting to shift to neighboring Niagara County - where 11.5% of people tested for COVID-19 on Tuesday were positive. The seven-day average at that point was 8.6%, which was second in New York (only trailing Allegany County's 9.1%).

Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh on Tuesday announced the replacement of the Upper Mountain Road culvert over Fish Creek in the Town of Lewiston is complete. The road will reopen to traffic by the end of the day, Wednesday, Dec. 2. The culvert, located northeast of Moyer Road, has been closed since September.

The Lewiston Community Lions and VFW Downriver Post 7487 are collecting toiletry items for our local female and male homeless veterans and those in the VA hospital and shelters. Travel and full-sized requested items include toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, lip balm, hand sanitizer, wipes, facial tissue packets, shampoo and lotion. A special request to remember our female veterans, as well, with donations of feminine products (tampons and sanitary pads), and size 1 and 2 diapers.

As a longtime supporter of the work of the Mount St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, Ensol Inc. took a special approach this year to support the hospital. As a sign of its deep appreciation for the nurses, doctors and therapists working on the holiday, Ensol graciously donated over 165 meals catered by Osteria 166 to hospital staff in celebration of Thanksgiving.
