As fall inches closer to winter, many Western New Yorkers will begin to decorate their homes for the holidays. But for some residents, decorating is a luxury. So, for the 11th straight year, hundreds of young volunteers will "brighten" a Buffalo neighborhood out of the kindness of their hearts.

The Kenan Arts Council is gearing up to be an exciting part of the holiday season. For the 38th year, the Kenan Arts Council will host the popular holiday gift show at the Kenan Center, 433 Locust St, Lockport. Dates are 5-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18. Admission is $4.

The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (NYS OASAS) announced the opening of the Aurora Village Residential Treatment Facility, operated by Horizon Health Services. The 25-bed facility will provide addiction treatment services for women ages 18 and over.

New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas and Allentown Association on Thursday celebrated projects underway and completed under a $300,000 Buffalo Main Streets Initiative grant, which is working with six property and business owners to complete façade and commercial renovation projects within a few blocks of Allen Street. The Allentown neighborhood is on the local, state and national registries for historic places.

Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, has announced two federal grants awarded to Compeer Buffalo to strengthen its mental health assistance programs. The grants total $2,175,000, and were awarded by the Health and Human Services Department's Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs.

As part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, Catholic Health is hosting drive-up drop-off sites in Erie and Niagara counties to help get unused and unwanted medications out of people's homes. During the continued construction of the Niagara Falls State Park Prospect Point welcome plaza project, contractors for the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation discovered a limited area of additional slag to be cleaned up on park property. State Parks said the materials have already been contained and pose no threat to public health and safety, as they are in the same fenced-off project area, inaccessible to the public, as last month's discovery.
