Erie County Fair 5K Run is certified flattest route in Western New York

The annual Erie County Fair 5K Run, presented by Good Health Saunas, returns to the Fairgrounds on Saturday, Aug. 11, with pistol start at 8:30 a.m. This USA Track & Field (USATF) 3.1-mile route has been certified as the flattest route in Western New York.

The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning is reminding area anglers of the upcoming 2018 Cost FLW (Fishing League Worldwide) Tournament Series, which will be held July 26-28 and will launch from the Safe Harbor Marina on the Outer Harbor. The premium bass fishing tournament has 160 boats already registered with approximately 350 participants anticipated, but it is expected roughly 200 boats will be registered by the start of the event.

Local UAW members and its veterans committee teamed up with AT&T to help collect more than 350 gently used mobile devices over the past three months. These phones will be donated to Cell Phones For Soldiers. The phones were collected at AT&T stores and UAW Locals across Western New York (including Lockport, Buffalo, Tonawanda and Hamburg).

Researcher at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center receives American Cancer Society Award

The American Cancer Society, the largest non-government, not-for-profit funding source of cancer research in the U.S., has approved funding for two grants totaling $832,000 to researchers in upstate New York in the first of two grant cycles for 2018. The grants are among 110 national research and training grants totaling more than $47.6 million that will fund investigators at 72 institutions across the country in the latest round of funding.

Untreated firewood may contain invasive pests that kill trees. To protect New York's forests, it may not be moved more than 50 miles from its source or origin.
