Greater Niagara FCU brings holiday cheer to Child Advocacy Center of Niagara clients

The Greater Niagara Federal Credit Union treated child clients of the Child Advocacy Center of Niagara to an extra special holiday. The Child Advocacy Center, a service of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, provides services to child victims of abuse and trauma.

World War II veteran Andrew J. Dodges reached out to Congressman Brian Higgins in late November with a Christmas wish: to receive a new set of the military service medals he earned while serving in the U.S. Army. Dodges' medals, including a Bronze Star and Purple Heart, were stolen from his home.

The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center has a new program for families. Every month, the venue will host an hour of story time, crafts and snacks in the train station atrium. Stories and crafts will help the youngest visitors engage with the museum's themes of African-American history, freedom and social justice.

The Cataract City is world-famous for its pizza, and throngs of people flocked to the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute on Old Falls Street to taste $1 slice samples - everything from cheese to old-fashioned, steak and mushroom to steak, chicken finger and onion ring.

Applications are now available for the 53rd annual Lewiston Art Festival, which will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, Aug. 11, 20I9, on Center Street in the Village of Lewiston. More than 175 professional artists will display and sell their work and compete for $5,000 in prizes in the juried show. The application deadline is April 1.
Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, Western New York Land Conservancy complete Stella Niagara Preserve landing restoration

Deposits for Food continues to assist pantries

Deposits for Food presented donations to two Niagara Falls food pantries last week: Community Missions, and Heart, Love & Soul. The proceeds were obtained from D4F's collections of returnable containers and scrap metal. To date, total donations have topped $55,000.

AAA projects 54.3 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more away from home this Thanksgiving, a 4.8 percent increase over last year. The 2018 holiday weekend will see the highest Thanksgiving travel volume in more than a dozen years (since 2005), with 2.5 million more people taking to the nation's roads, skies, rails and waterways compared with last year.
