Relay For Life of Greater Niagara opens; 'Party in the Park' next Saturday

The annual Relay For Life of Greater Niagara returns for 2022 with a Luminaria ceremony from 7-10 p.m. Friday, June 3, at Lewiston-Porter High School. It continues Saturday, June 11, with all-day events at Reservoir State Park on Witmer Road in the Town of Niagara.

NYS celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday issued a proclamation designating June 2022 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month. The governor also announced the first Latino openly LGBTQ+ judge nominated to the New York State Court of Claims, along with several additional measures recognizing LGBTQ+ New Yorkers and celebrating their contributions to the state, including the launch of "I LOVE NY" LGBTQ+ 2022 Pride Guide, the raising of the LGBTQ+ progress flag across the state, the illumination of state landmarks in the colors of the LGBTQ+ Pride flag, and the opening of a new exhibition in the State Capitol spotlighting LGBTQ+ service members in the U.S. military during Pride Month.
AAA: Gas tax relief in store

New York's tax break on gasoline went into effect on Wednesday, June 1. The state is suspending the sales and excise taxes on each gallon of gas, which equates to a total discount of 16 cents per gallon through the end of the year. Many counties across New York have also followed suit and will suspend or cap gas taxes at the county level.

Kathy Hochul announced more than 80 million COVID-19 over-the-counter tests have been distributed to date by New York state as part of the administration's ongoing efforts to keep New Yorkers protected throughout the pandemic. At the direction of Mayor Byron Brown, the dome of Buffalo City Hall will remain lit in orange through Sunday, May 29, in memory of the victims of the tragic May 14 mass shooting at the Tops Market on Jefferson Avenue. The orange lighting is also in memory of the 19 children and two teachers lost in the May 24 shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

A recent retiree, Sarkees began collecting bottles and cans at the Lewiston Jazz Festival, with the idea of turning them in to raise funds for local Niagara County food pantries. So began his "Deposits 4 Food" initiative.

This popular event has been held for more than two decades, and highlights the fisheries of Lake Erie, the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. Anglers will target species including smallmouth bass, walleye, trout and salmon using a variety of fishing methods.
