UB receives $3 million Mellon grant in support of indigenous studies

The University at Buffalo College of Arts and Sciences has received a $3.174 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in support of a new department of indigenous studies.

Cuomo: $300 million plan to reimagine Erie Canal

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday unveiled the 29th proposal of his 2020 State of the State: a $300 million plan to reimagine the Erie Canal by creating recreational activities on the Canal to boost tourism, mitigating flooding, enhancing irrigation and recreational fishing and restoring wetlands. Cuomo is recommending the New York Power Authority board, which now oversees the Canal Corp. as a subsidiary, approve the $300 million investment over the next five years at the board's January meeting.
Western New York Land Conservancy reaches $1.6 million fundraising goal; will purchase Mossy Point near East Aurora

The Western New York Land Conservancy has met its $1.6 million goal to save Mossy Point. As a headwater forest, the land will provide clean water and prevent flooding in communities downstream.

The Carnegie Art Center hosted a big night this past Thursday for its annual "Art off the Wall" event. The largest wall was covered with small 5-by-7-inch pieces of art, while the space also contained a room dedicated to 12-by-12-inch canvases and even tinted glass that were bid on silently by artists' fans.
'Festival of Slice' crowns pizza powers

The award for Best Cheese went to Jaco's Pizzeria. Sammy's Pizzeria took Best Specialty for its "7-1-6" pizza, which features chicken fingers and steak. The People's Choice award went to Favorites Pizzeria in Lewiston for its honey garlic chicken pizza.

Tedeschi Trucks Band's "Wheels of Soul Tour" returns to the Artpark Amphitheater on July 14, 2020, as part of the "Tuesdays in the Park presented by M&T Bank" series. Tedeschi Trucks Band will be joined by eight-piece soul band St. Paul and the Broken Bones plus singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Gabe Dixon. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13.

He was accompanied on his PatProctorCopter by Mrs. Claus and Town of Lewiston Supervisor Steve Broderick. Once the Rainbow Air crew landed, Santa greeted Mayor Anne Welch, Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce President Jennifer Pauly, and 2019 Peach Queen Victoria Skrlin-Kozak.

The Western New York Book Arts Center's 12th annual "Last Minute Panic Holiday Marketplace" will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, and from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at 468 Washington St., Buffalo. The sale this year will include over 40 vendors on both floors of the Book Arts Center.
