Beatty fundraiser enables purchase of new Wieland sleeper sofas

Niagara Hospice announced recently that 10 general-inpatient rooms and all 10 residential units at its Niagara Hospice House facility in Lockport now feature new Wieland sleeper sofas, providing flexibility and convenience during patient visits and overnight stays.

The multipurpose sofas, manufactured by Wieland of New Haven, Indiana, are known as “Sleep Too” and feature two seating areas separated by a table that can be raised. The bed portion folds down easily with the push of a button.

“The new sleeper sofas create a family room setting while ensuring guests are available and active by offering a unique space to work, eat, play games, recharge personal devices or rest while not missing an opportunity to consult with staff or assist their loved one,” said Janet Ligammari, RN, director of hospice facility services at Niagara Hospice.

The purchase of the new sofas was supported by nearly $30,000 in proceeds from the 20th annual Jack Beatty Memorial Hospice Cruise & Clambake held on July 12. More than 300 people attended the event, which had to be relocated from the Youngstown Yacht Club to Porter-on-the-Lake Park due to flooding conditions that existed in the lower Niagara River and Lake Ontario.

“It gives great satisfaction to everyone involved with the Cruise & Clambake to know that any Niagara County family that goes to the Niagara Hospice House will experience the comfort of home that the Wieland sleeper sofas provide,” said Paul Beatty Sr., co-chair for the Jack Beatty Memorial Hospice Cruise & Clambake. “We look forward to another great event next summer that will continue support the Niagara Hospice mission of providing specialized care and personalized support to families faced with late-stage illnesses.”

The couches that were replaced were part of the original furnishings installed when the Hospice House opened in June 2007. Niagara Hospice has donated several couches to the Salvation Army and Goodwill and will continue to distribute the remaining couches to other organizations.

The 21st annual Cruise & Clambake will be held Friday, July 10, 2020. The benefit will feature local skippers and crews from various marinas on Lake Ontario, donating their time and boats to take participants on a cruise up the Lower Niagara River.

Organizers of this event said they are now seeking owners of boats that can handle more than six guests who may be interested in participating, sponsoring, volunteering or donating items for this event. Contact Allison Bolt at 716-280-0780 or email [email protected].

Since 1988, Niagara Hospice, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has provided end-of-life comfort, care and support to more than 25,000 Niagara County individuals and families faced with terminal illnesses. Patients receive hospice care in the location and manner that offers the most comfort, and it is appropriate for any advanced stage illness where the prognosis is six months or less. Patients with exclusively Medicaid coverage can receive care for 12 months. Every person has access to hospice care regardless of ability to pay.
