FeedMore, leaders partner for 'March for Meals' to spread awareness on critical need for Meals on Wheels services

Government officials and community partners will join FeedMore WNY to provide nutritious meals and companionship to homebound neighbors from March 20-24. The weeklong effort is a part of FeedMore WNY's and Meals on Wheels America's annual "March for Meals" campaign, which highlights the vital role Meals on Wheels programs play in maintaining the health and independence of our older community members.

The Taste of Buffalo presented by Tops announced Elizabeth Mamot, owner of travel planning agency Aventra, was elected chair for the 2023 event - which marks 40 years since the first iteration of the festival. Mamot will lead the planning efforts for the Taste of Buffalo, taking place July 8-9 along Delaware Avenue and Niagara Square in downtown Buffalo.

Coyote sightings are likely to increase in the coming months, and DEC encourages New Yorkers to be aware of the potential for conflicts and follow DEC guidelines to prevent negative encounters.

In a period of less than a year, the Western New York region has been rocked by a tragic, mass-casualty shooting; historic snowstorms; flooding in the Southern Tier; and hundreds of home fires that have displaced families and, in some instances, resulted in loss of life. In response to all of those events, Red Cross volunteers have been there to assist their neighbors in times of greatest need, just as they do every day in fulfilling the organization's mission of preventing and alleviating human suffering in times of emergency.

For the second consecutive year, Villa Maria College will host "VillaCon," a one-day convention featuring gaming, cosplay, animation, film, vendors and artists. This year's con will take place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 25, on Villa Maria's campus, located at 240 Pine Ridge Road, Buffalo. Last year's inaugural event drew more than 500 people from across Western New York, and the college expects this year's event to attract even more people.
Hochul: State Police issue 11,865 tickets during Super Bowl weekend Stop DWI enforcement campaign

The New York State Police announced Troopers issued more than 11,800 tickets during a special STOP DWI traffic enforcement period over Super Bowl Weekend. During the campaign which started Friday, Feb. 10, and ran through Monday, Feb. 13, Troopers arrested 183 people for DWI, and investigated 490 crashes, which resulted in 73 people being injured and four fatalities.
NYS Quitline: Menthol cigarettes can hasten addiction and complicate quit-attempts

Ammonia. Formaldehyde. Arsenic. When wrapped inside a menthol cigarette, fumes from these and other deadly chemicals become more palatable to inhale. Approximately 1.7 million New York state residents still smoke, and flavored tobacco products such as menthol cigarettes make it easier to become addicted and harder to quit.
Higgins: $500,000 in federal funding to support cancer screenings at Community Health Center of Buffalo

Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant totaling $500,000 was awarded to the Community Health Center of Buffalo (CHCB). Funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and awarded through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Accelerated Cancer Screening program, the grant is designed to improve access to screenings and early detection in Western New York's underserved communities.

Awarded by the U.S. Department of Education and funded by the School-Based Mental Health Services program, the grant will be used to support school and community mental health programs while creating opportunities for local graduate students.
DiNapoli: Thruway Authority toll increases should be last option

The New York State Thruway Authority has proposed a multiyear schedule of systemwide toll increases to begin in 2024, but a new report from State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli identifies concerns with the proposal and urges the Thruway Authority to first improve its operations and maximize non-toll revenues. DiNapoli's office reviewed a decade of the Thruway Authority's finances and the toll hike proposal, and found gaps in essential information necessary to evaluate the proposal.
