NYS DCP offers tips to save money at gas pump

The New York State Division of Consumer Protection (DCP) recommends useful tips to help New Yorkers save money every time they fill up. As gas prices continue to hit record highs, 16 cents per gallon, with more savings in some counties, can make a big difference, especially during the summer vacation season when millions of consumers are hitting the roads.

AAA: Gas tax relief in store

New York's tax break on gasoline went into effect on Wednesday, June 1. The state is suspending the sales and excise taxes on each gallon of gas, which equates to a total discount of 16 cents per gallon through the end of the year. Many counties across New York have also followed suit and will suspend or cap gas taxes at the county level.

DiNapoli: Local sales tax collections up 21% in first quarter of 2022

Local government sales tax collections grew by 21.1%, or $901 million, in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year, according to a report released by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Collections for the three-month period totaled nearly $5.2 billion, with growth at least partially driven by inflation, which hit a 40-year-high in March.

As I am writing this column, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Western New York, according to AAA, is $4.24 a gallon. One year ago, that same gallon of gas cost $2.86. Clearly, the rise in gas prices, and the overall inflation of prices on everything, is hitting the wallets of families across Niagara County.
