Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant totaling $645,259 awarded to The Service Collaborative of Western New York. Funded by the American Rescue Plan and fiscal year 2022 appropriations, the AmeriCorps grant will provide support for the AmeriCorps Builds Lives through Education (ABLE) Early Childhood Program, which helps close education gaps among preschool students in Western New York.

"Passion and Patronage Gifts from the Gerald Mead Collection" opens at the Castellani Art Museum on Friday, July 1, and is on view until Sunday, Dec. 18. This exhibition features noted Buffalo art collector Dr. Gerald C. Mead Jr.'s gifted artworks to the museum (since 1997), as well as his promised bequest gift of 54 works by 43 artists.

This program ensures all children continue to receive nutritious meals during summer vacation. Meals are comparable to the national school breakfast and national school lunch programs throughout the school year.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Niagara County Community College. After a two-year hiatus, the annual NCCC Foundation Scholarship Gala will return in person with a special diamond theme to mark the occasion. This event is the primary fundraiser to support student scholarships, and will take place Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute.

WNY Book Arts Center (Book Arts) will launch the 2022 PRINTING PARTNERS sessions in conjunction with community partner Carnegie Art Center. This program offers free, sequential art classes to children and families in their own neighborhoods, and as always it is free to participate in. Open to ages 8-plus, students will learn the art of origami, printmaking, as well as an array of bookmaking techniques with resident teaching artist Ruby Meritt.

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced the State University of New York Board of Trustees directed all 64 SUNY campuses to update their policies regarding the use of a chosen name and pronouns to ensure that transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary students' identities are fully reflected and represented in campus systems. This change is the next step taken in SUNY's mission to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for students within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Seven of Lazy Creek Art's students, ranging from 6-9 years old, recently collaborated to create a self-published picture book titled "Kitty." On June 5, the young artists presented Save-A-Pet Niagara of Newfane with a $100 check from the initial proceeds from their publication.

The top winner will have their art displayed in the halls to the Capitol Building and will also receive two tickets from Southwest Airlines to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony to be held in Washington, D.C., at the end of June (alongside young artists from across the country).

Guests are asked to meet near "The Hatch" at 329 Erie St., Buffalo. The event is open to NCCC alumni, employees, and friends of the college. Proceeds will support the NCCC Alumni Association.

The "100 Deadliest Days" is the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when fatal teen crashes increase dramatically. Nationwide, 7,124 people died in teen driver-related summertime crashes over a 10-year period from 2011-20. That's more than seven people a day each summer, and that is nearly half of the total number of those killed in teen-driver crashes for the entire rest of the year.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the application for the Excelsior Scholarship for new applicants for the 2022-23 academic year is now open here. The Excelsior Scholarship, in combination with other aid programs, allows eligible full-time students to attend a SUNY or CUNY two-year or four-year college tuition-free.

New York State Sen. Sean Ryan and the Senate majority passed legislation (S.121B) designed to improve Holocaust education in New York schools. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Anna Kaplan and Assembly member Nily Rozic, has already passed the Assembly and now heads to Gov. Kathy Hochul's desk for her signature. Ryan is a co-sponsor of the legislation.
