Summer at the Castellani Art Museum

The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University (CAM) has many summer opportunities for visitors of all ages and interests.

Starting Thursday, June 16, CAM will have newly extended public hours (every Thursday from 1-7 p.m., and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.). General admission is always free.

The CAM will host a free celebratory reception from 4:30-7 p.m. Thursday, June 16, for three new early summer exhibitions: 

√ “Niagara in Summer and Winter” pairs historic prints and contemporary artworks with the timely images and texts from a once-popular souvenir book. The CAM has one of the largest Niagara Falls collections internationally, spanning over 200 years.

√ “Painting Water & Cutting Paper: Traditional Turkish Paper Arts” dives into the traditional arts of Turkish paper marbling (ebru) and Turkish paper cutting (kat’ı sanatı) through the works of Hatice Erbas Sorkunlu, an artist based in Rochester, who will be present at the event.

√ “Cut, Fold, Roll: Making Art with Paper” is a Niagara University student-curated exhibition that explores paper art traditions practiced locally: including papel picado, origami and quilling.

At 4:30 p.m., Niagara University student curators will speak with visitors in “Cut, Fold Roll.” Event remarks will begin at 5:30 p.m. A tour of “Niagara in Summer and Winter” with curator Mary Helen Miskuly will take place at 6 p.m.; and a tour of “Painting Water” with curator Ed Millar is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be served on the museum outdoor portico. On Saturday, June 25, the CAM will host two free “Art Express” workshops for children in grades pre-K-3 with young audiences teaching artist Fotini Galanes. Participants will leave with a hand-drawn artwork and have a chance to explore the vibrant and colorful art exhibition of artist Dorothy Gillespie. Space is limited.
