This week, President Joe Biden signed into law a bill, introduced by Congressman Brian Higgins, honoring World War II veteran Indiana Hunt-Martin. The legislation (H.R. 2142) designates Buffalo's Central Park post office, located at 170 Manhattan Ave., as the Indiana Hunt-Martin Post Office Building.

SUNY Erie Community College and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra are presenting a free concert series in the atrium of SUNY Erie's City Campus, at 121 Ellicott St., Buffalo. The series will include six noon concerts on select Mondays, during which listeners can gather in the atrium and either bring a lunch or purchase one at the SUNY Erie cafeteria.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn on Tuesday announced a jury found 63-year-old John M. Sauberan of Buffalo guilty of one count of murder in the second degree (class "A-I" felony). Jurors rendered a decision in the afternoon after three hours of deliberation following a five-day trial, convicting the defendant of the only charge in the indictment against him.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant totaling $365,535 awarded to the Massachusetts Avenue Project and Grassroots Gardens of Western New York. Funding comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is awarded through the National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Community Food Projects Grant program. It will support the Buffalo Food Justice Project, which aims to address food equity and access in underserved communities.

The Grand Island Town Board has set a public hearing to discuss the tax cap for 8 p.m. Oct. 17 in Grand Island Town Hall. In addition, the Town Board has scheduled two workshop meetings to be held to discuss the 2023 town budget. These meetings will be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 17 and 11:15 a.m. Oct. 19.

The Grand Island Golden Age Center, at 3278 Whitehaven Road, will host a flu shot clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. The clinic is "a community event that's open to the public right here on Grand Island," explained Jen Menter, recreation supervisor of the center. The flu shots will be administered by Walgreen's employees.

Catholic Health is expanding its hospital visiting hours. Patients may have up to two visitors at a time between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily at Kenmore Mercy Hospital, Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Sisters of Charity Hospital (Main Street and St. Joseph campuses). Visitation beyond normal hours continues to be permitted under certain conditions.

Children enjoyed pony rides, as well as opportunities to feed llamas and other animals, as well as to view turtles, snapping dragons and assorted creatures.
