Visitors filed through River Lea to see the Grand Island Historical Society’s collection of furs at its open house on Sept. 18. Furs of all varieties, from stoles and hats to full-length coats, were on display.

According to Historical Society member Maggie Gushue, who was serving as a docent at the event, “Our fur collection was donated from all kinds of different people from the area. They came from all different families, not all of them Islanders. We’ve got quite a collection of furs, but the problem is that it is very hard to store furs. We decided that we would have a one-time display of the furs, and then, we will probably be donating them to a theatrical group. We have fox furs and beaver furs and raccoon furs and rabbit furs. It’s quite a variety, and we’re going to find them a good home.”

The next Historical Society Open House is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16. It will feature a display of uniforms, medals and other memorabilia honoring the military.
