The Grand Island Rotary Club meat raffle fundraiser on March 3 sold out the Knights of Columbus Star of the Sea Council Hall on Whitehaven Road. The event, in support of the Growing Readers program in the Grand Island Central School District, saw participants bidding on meat packages and putting tickets in raffles.

Erie County: Hardwick resolution approved to transfer surplus items to GI

The week of Feb. 5-9, Erie County Legislator Kevin Hardwick's resolution transferring surplus property from Erie County's warehouse to the Town of Grand Island was approved by the Erie County Legislature. The items no longer served a purpose to Erie County, and were requested by municipal officials in Grand Island.
EC Department of Social Services announces Medicaid transition

Medicaid recipients in Erie County will shortly begin to receive notices regarding a new way to renew their Medicaid coverage. These notices will come from the New York State of Health, and will inform recipients, "You and/or members of your household need to renew your coverage through NY State of Health."
Erie County Agricultural Society to award cash scholarships

Poloncarz, Burstein review 2017 Erie County opioid fatalities

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz on Tuesday joined county Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein to review the latest county data on the opioid epidemic and fatalities associated with it, noting the Erie County Medical Examiner's office has confirmed 233 opioid overdose fatalities for 2017, with another 35 cases suspected but still pending confirmation. In 2016, 301 individuals died of an opioid overdose in Erie County.

At the turn of the 20th century, motorboat clubs were a new thing. In Western New York, a motorboat club was established on what is now called Unity Island in 1903. When New York state appropriated the land to build the Black Rock lock, the club had to be moved.
