The University at Buffalo-led initiative to generate 100 megawatts of on- and off-site renewable energy hit a milestone today with the issuing of requests for proposals. RFPs went out for on-site installations at each of the five partner institutions in the project: UB, SUNY Buffalo State, SUNY Erie, the City of Buffalo and Erie County.

In an effort to reduce the availability of unused prescription drugs to people struggling with addiction, New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs announced his office is partnering with the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPPS) to distribute thousands of Deterra Drug Deactivation Systems throughout Western New York.

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz has issued a travel advisory, in effect until further notice, for the City of Buffalo and all of northern Erie County due to a winter storm that could leave snow accumulations of up to 2 feet in some areas by Thursday morning. The entire region will see lake-effect snow, blowing and drifting snow, and extreme cold temperatures and wind chills over the next 36 hours and into Thursday. The travel advisory urges against any unnecessary travel during this period, and using extreme caution if travel is unavoidable.

The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry has announced the return of Winterfest to Chestnut Ridge Park 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 27. The free, family fun event will offer sledding, a snow-sculpting competition with prizes awarded for the cutest, funniest and most original compositions, marshmallow roasting, as well as chainsaw-carving demonstrations, arts and crafts, and a monster mural.

Again this holiday season, the Town of Grand Island benefited from the Erie County Correctional Facility's Horticulture Program. The wreaths and poinsettias visitors to town buildings and in offices were grown/made by the inmates at the Correctional Facility and donated to the town for use on town property.
