The Erie County Youth Bureau, a division of the Erie County Department of Social Services, will host its fifth annual "Primetime Picnic" from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, at the Jewish Community Center's Camp Centerland, 2640 N. Forest Road, Getzville. This event allows approximately 400 children and program staff to celebrate summer and to participate in educational and recreational opportunities in a safe and fun environment.

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz announced a new snowplowing agreement has been reached between Erie County and local municipalities contracting with the county for snow removal on county roads. Erie County's current three-year contract with these 31 municipalities for snow and ice control will expire on Aug. 31.

In a ceremony at Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post 9249, New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs recognized lifelong Grand Island resident Daniel McMahon as a 2019 New York State Veterans' Hall of Fame inductee. McMahon, who was also honored in a statewide ceremony in Albany in May, was presented with a framed proclamation marking the honor before his fellow veterans and post members.

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz announced an agreement on a new six-year contract has been reached between Erie County and the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA). The new pact, approved by NYSNA membership on July 3, includes raises of 2% in 2020-23, along with a raise of 3% in 2019.

The Grand Island Republican Women's Club held its annual picnic on June 12, hosted by Lana and Tom Redell. The main theme was "Get out to vote on Primary Day--June 25!" 2019 is the first year for a June primary election (instead of September) in New York. Informative speeches, great food and engaging conversation were enjoyed by all. Auctioneer duties were ably handled by Pete Marston, assisted by Tom Digati with Barb Nowakowski serving as cashier for the much-anticipated annual event.
Grand Island: Board approves special use permit for B&B

After tabling the matter at its last meeting, the Town Board voted 4-1 to approve a special use permit for applicant Jie Zhu to have a bed and breakfast at 2568 West Oakfield Road. The board approved the permit, which is renewable yearly, with conditions.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday announced the New York State Thruway Authority Board of Directors approved the selection of the design-build team that will complete the installation of cashless tolling on the Thruway systemwide by the end of 2020. The $355.3 million investment will transform the Thruway system for the approximately 267 million motorists who travel the superhighway each year.
