A total of 629 students were recently recognized for their outstanding academic achievements for the spring semester at Niagara County Community College. Both full-time and part-time students were honored for their scholastic successes by being named to either the dean's list or the part-time honors list.

Ten Lives Club has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the East Hill Foundation to help save more cats in Western New York. The grant is part of the Save the Cats Project and will allow the rescue to purchase a new feline serenity suite, a flat-top surgery table and an autoclave.

On Thursday, New York State Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt and Assembly members Angelo Morinello and Mike Norris sent a letter requesting immediate coordination between the New York State Office of Emergency Management (SEMO), the cities of Lockport and Niagara Falls, and Niagara County, regarding flash flooding that occurred July 20. Severe rainstorms caused a significant amount of damage throughout those areas.

In response to the state of emergency issued by Niagara County regarding the heavy rainstorms experienced on Tuesday, July 20, the City of Niagara Falls is asking residents and homeowners who have experienced damage as a result of these rains to their homes contact the city to report this information. Individuals looking to provide detailed information about damage need to do so no later than 4 p.m. this Friday, July 23.

A state of emergency, including a travel ban, has been declared in Niagara County by Legislature Chairwoman Rebecca Wydysh, Director of Emergency Management Jonathon Schultz and Sheriff Michael Filicetti. The travel ban is in effect until further notice. Only emergency travel is allowed.

On July 21, the New York State Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing at the Wheatfield Community Center (2790 Church Road) related to the improvements proposed by the DOT for a pair of "dangerous" intersections along Niagara Falls Boulevard at Ward and Witmer roads. The hearing will run from 4-6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Niagara County Office for the Aging has begun distributing farmers market coupon booklets at sites throughout Niagara County. The Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program, provided by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, provides coupons to all who meet age and income requirements. Each booklet contains five coupons worth $4 each ($20 total), which can be used to buy fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at participating farmers' markets throughout New York.

On Tuesday, a press conference was held to celebrate the return of the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy to the Sanborn campus of Niagara County Community College. NCLEA will relocate to NCCC in August after a decade at Niagara University. Several elected officials joined college leaders to pledge their support of local law enforcement and the academy's move.

On Tuesday, Niagara University broke ground on its $11.5 million renovation project at the university's Kiernan Recreation Center. Project construction is scheduled to begin later this month, and the renovation is expected to be completed for the fall 2022 semester. Funding for the project includes a $1 million grant from the NYS Higher Education Capital Matching program (HECap), as well as other private donations and university investments.

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez announced construction will soon begin on a $6.4 million project to rehabilitate State Route 384, Niagara Street, from John B. Daly Boulevard to the Rainbow Bridge Plaza, and John B. Daly Boulevard, from Niagara Street to Buffalo Avenue in the City of Niagara Falls. The project will transform Niagara Street in downtown Niagara Falls, creating a multimodal thoroughfare which will reconnect the portions of Niagara Falls' downtown.

Last week, the M-60A3 army tank located at the Wheatfield Veterans Memorial received a fresh coat of paint. While it's still green, of course, the tank now more closely matches the paint of the UH1-D Huey helicopter also featured in the memorial.
