New York Power Authority's fishing facilities, including the fishing pier at the base of the NYPA Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant, will open for the season Thursday, April 1 - weather and water levels permitting.

Niagara County Youth Bureau accepting applications for summer food service program

The Niagara County Youth Bureau will return as a sponsor for the 2021 summer food service program (SFSP), which ensures children who are economically disadvantaged continue to receive nutritious meals during vacation. Meals are comparable to the national school breakfast and national school lunch programs offered throughout the school year.

DEC public comment period for proposed Town of Niagara asphalt plant

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is holding a public comment period regarding an air quality permit filed on behalf of a proposed asphalt plant for 4660 Witmer Road in the Town of Niagara. Written comments may be sent to Kerri L. Pickard-DePriest at DEC Region 9 Headquarters, 270 Michigan Ave., Buffalo, NY 14203. The deadline for comment recently was extended to May 3.

Niagara County clerk: Driver's license expiration extended again

Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski on Wednesday said Gov. Andrew Cuomo has issued executive order 202.97, which extends the expiration dates on licenses and permits that expired after March 1, 2020, to April 16, 2021. At this time, all transactions must be done by appointment only, although Jastrzemski said his office is working to change that next month.

Niagara County District Attorney Brian Seaman is alerting Niagara County residents to fraudulent phone calls being made to residents purporting to be a National Grid employee. The supposed National Grid employees tells the resident National Grid is sending a truck out to disconnect their power unless a payment is immediately made to National Grid via Zelle (an online payment service.)

The Niagara County SPCA kicked off its fundraising season on Wednesday with its first "Bark Day Bash" event at the Sheraton Hotel in Niagara Falls. The event provided a lively, yet-COVID-19-friendly and well-organized affair for attendees to celebrate St. Patrick's Day whilst raising money for one of the area's foremost animal welfare organizations.

$3.36 million in Greenway funds for Veterans Memorial Park project

On Tuesday, the Host Community Standing Committee (HCSC), which administers and oversees projects financed by the Niagara River Greenway Recreation/Tourism Fund, awarded $3.36 million to Veterans Memorial Community Park in the Town of Niagara. The funds will be used to cover phases III and IV of the park's master plan. The project was deemed consistent with the principles of the Niagara Greenway by the Greenway Commission on March 3.

NYS: COVID-19 vaccination appointments now available at Conference & Event Center Niagara Falls

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced appointments are now available at 10 new state-run mass-vaccination sites across the state, including The Conference & Event Center Niagara Falls at 101 Old Falls St. All 10 sites will open Friday, March 19, and will operate from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Each site will have the ability to vaccinate more than 1,000 New Yorkers daily, dependent on supply from the federal government.

Late Tuesday, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting a fire inside the lower residence at 2954 Niagara Falls Blvd., in the Town of Wheatfield. NCSO deputies responded and observed heavy smoke coming from inside the building.
Niagara County summer youth employment program now accepting applications

Niagara County Employment & Training announced applications are being accepted for the department's summer youth employment program (SYEP). In order to be considered for the program, applicants must be a county resident, be between 14-20 years-old (must turn 14 by May 14 and cannot turn 21 until after Aug. 27), and meet income guidelines.

Hill: Safety improvements coming to 'dangerous' Route 77 intersection

Niagara County Legislator Mike Hill said the New York State Department of Transportation traffic group has completed a safety evaluation and will be making safety improvements to the intersection of Lewiston Road (Route 77) and Griswold Street in the Town of Royalton. The intersection has been the site of numerous accidents, including a serious accident with fatalities this past November.
Pappas lifts winter parking restrictions

Charlie Dieteman hopes his senior year at Niagara Career and Technical Education Center (NCTEC) and Lewiston-Porter High School ends on a high note with his annual cerebral palsy fundraiser. He is selling green rubber bracelets for a dollar for an organization known as Empower. Empower is a premier service provider in Western New York that offers diverse programming and individualized care and support to make people's lives better. Green represents cerebral palsy awareness.

Niagara County leaders frustrated over vaccine allocations

Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh and Director of Public Health Daniel J. Stapleton on Tuesday said it does not appear Niagara County will be getting the amount of vaccine doses it expected from New York state. The county ordered 6,500 doses of vaccine, including 5,000 of Johnson & Johnson. The county is still expecting a small supply of Moderna.
Carolyn Cianciosa Memorial Scholarship available at Niagara County Community College

For more than 20 years, Carolyn Cianciosa was a faculty member at Niagara County Community College. She played a critical role in establishing the radiologic technology program, and took pride in growing rad tech from 13 to 100 students before she retired in 2012.
