Village of Lewiston seeks input on digital sign proposal

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston will hold a public information session at 6 p.m. Monday, May 16, to discuss the viability of adding a digital information sign at the corner of Center Street and Portage Road. This Academy Park marker would replace the recently retired black and white letterboard sign.

Niagara University announced that Jeff and Mary Helen Holzschuh have pledged a gift of $10 million to the university. In recognition of the gift, the university will rename the college of business to the Holzschuh College of Business Administration. With this generous gift, Jeff and Mary Helen become the largest benefactors in the history of the university.

Niagara County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti recently announced Capt. Matthew Grainge and Lt. Daniel Zimmerman were recognized by the National Sheriffs' Association as the Explorer Post Advisors of the Year for 2022. Grainge and Zimmerman have been advisers to NCSO Explorer Post 2911 since 2016.

Pontoon removal at Niagara Falls

Over the next day or so, New York's Army National Guard is using a CH-47F Chinook heavy lift helicopter to remove a pontoon from a portion of the New York Power Authority's "ice boom" at Niagara Falls. The New York State Park Police is teaming with U.S. Army aviators from the New York Army National Guard's Detachment 1, Company "B" 3rd Battalion on the operation, which began Tuesday morning.

New building at NCCC to house Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy

A new training facility for the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy will be built on the Sanborn campus of Niagara County Community College. An estimated $2.27 million for the building was appropriated in the SUNY building fund adopted by the state budget passage a few weeks ago.

As Toronto's famed foursome Barenaked Ladies prepare for their North American "Last Summer on Earth" tour, the band will release multiple tracks recorded live at their recent sold-out Royal Albert Hall show in London - along with video content, a contest component, and a bonus track. The tracks are the first live versions of songs from the multi-Platinum band's latest album, "Detour de Force," giving fans an opportunity to hear the band's stage renditions before they hit the road on their U.S. tour.

HAL: Rare painting of Frontenac seen publicly for first time

Dr. Michael Hess, a prominent Lockport dentist, drove to Lewiston on Thursday and shared a painting he owns with a group of enthusiastic volunteers who were astounded with the quality, accuracy and rarity of the artwork. It is the only known illustration of the French vessel Frontenac landing in Lewiston on Dec. 6, 1678, with Father Louis Hennepin aboard.

Mount St. Mary Academy student awarded US Figure Skating award

Mia Quarantillo, a senior at Mount St. Mary Academy, was awarded the Graduating Seniors Bronze Award by the U.S. Figure Skating Association. Quarantillo competes for the Niagara University Figure Skating Club, a competitive club in which the members travel and compete individually.
