Celebration of Niagara Falls USA pizza caps off first evening of Jingle Falls USA programming
Get ready for pizza, pizza and more pizza! The inaugural "Festival of Slice," "A Celebration of Niagara Falls USA Pizza," is planned for 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, 28 Old Falls St. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
The Festival of Slice is taking place as part of the first evening of the 2018 Jingle Falls USA program, a collaborative holiday celebration in downtown Niagara Falls.
After months of preparations, more than a dozen Niagara County pizzerias are expected to vend their very best cheese and specialty pizza slices all under one roof. Pizza slices will be sold for $1 each in order to entice guests to try various pizzas throughout the evening. Golden Pizza Wheels will be given to both the Best Cheese Slice and the Best Specialty Slice. Guests will also be able to vote on a People's Choice Award.
"One thing everyone has in common is their love of pizza, and Niagara Falls USA is certainly an area with an abundance of amazing pizzerias," said Chris Stoianoff, who conceived the festival idea and name. He also serves as one the event organizers, who "tossed" the idea around as part of Jingle Falls USA festivities this year. "We are proud to celebrate our culinary assets and hope to grow The Festival of Slice in the future."
Current participants include well-established and new pizzerias, including DiCamillo Bakery, Leon's Italian Bistro & Pizza, Casa Antica, Submasters Bar & Grill, Grandma D's, Broadway Pizza, Gagster's, Donatello's, Jaco's, Goodfellas Pizzeria, Anthony's Pizza, The Little Bakery, Old Greenwalls, Joey's Pizzeria and The Como Restaurant.
Interested pizzerias are still able to register until Nov. 16 at nf-cd.org/festivalofslice-registration, or by calling 716-282-8992. There is no registration fee, although pizzerias must be located within Niagara County.
The Festival of Slice is made possible by the City of Niagara Falls, the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, Destination Niagara USA, Niagara Falls Community Development and Old Falls Street, USA.
Other Jingle Falls USA activities taking place on Nov. 30 include a community candlelight stroll from Niagara Falls City Hall to Old Falls Street, beginning at 5:15 p.m.; a tree-lighting ceremony on Old Falls Street's middle block followed by a fireworks display at 5:45 p.m.; fire pits, holiday spirits and festive illuminations on Old Falls Street; as well as the life-sized student-made "Gingerbread Wonderland," hosted on the second floor of the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute.
"Guests of the Festival of Slice will have plenty of activities to choose from that evening, both on Old Falls Street and inside the Culinary Institute," Stoianoff said.
