Gov. Kathy Hochul recognized October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in New York, issuing a proclamation and directing that all State landmarks be illuminated in purple on "Purple Thursday," Oct. 19, in honor of those impacted by domestic violence.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Neighborhood Health Center's annual Christmas Shoppe, led by Sister Nora Sweeney. The Christmas Shoppe assists needy families in the region during the holidays.
Mount St. Mary's Child Care Center celebrates 35th anniversary with open house

The center, which provides services for children ages infant on up, opened its doors adjacent to Catholic Health's Mount St. Mary's Hospital in 1988. To celebrate this occasion, the center will hold an open house for the community from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served and there will be fun for the whole family.

Sculptor Susan Geissler directed a group of volunteers from American Legion Post 1346 in the annual cleaning and waxing of the statue of Charles DeGlopper. Geissler, whose works include the Freedom Crossing and Tuscarora Heroes monuments in Lewiston, said regular cleaning and waxing of bronze sculptures will ensure they stay in good condition for years to come.

Hessney, who died on May 11 at age 64 in Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
