CSEA Unit 7650 recently hosted a back-to-school drive to collect and distribute free school supplies to families in need. During the months of July and August, union members collected items including backpacks, tissue, pencil pouches, crayons, colored pencils, pens, pencils, folders, paper, notebooks and binders for Tuscarora Nation Elementary School students.

Town of Niagara Active Hose was the scene of a mega meat and basket raffle to benefit Francis Center, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis at Stella Niagara. More than $3,000 worth of beef, pork, chicken and fish was up for grabs at the mid-October event, in addition to dozens of themed baskets.

On Oct. 13, eighth graders from Veronica Connor Middle School could be seen walking down the multipurpose trail on the West River. They were carrying garbage bags and collecting litter from the trail, as well as from the area between the trail and the river.

Niagara County Legislator Irene Myers presented $1,500 in funding to scouting programs in Youngstown on Oct. 16 during an awards presentation to the Scouts, leaders and parents at the Youngstown Presbyterian Church. Cub Scout Pack 829 and Boy Scout Troop 829 each received $750 from the Niagara County Legislature.

Here's hoping for all treats and no tricks this Halloween! An estimated 73% of consumers plan to celebrate the holiday this year, up from 69% last year, according to The National Retail Federation. Moreover, 68% of consumers plan to hand out candy to millions of children trick or treating on Oct. 31. It will surely be a busy night on roads and sidewalks - and the worst night for vandalism.
