Niagara Hospice celebrated Armed Forces Day with the American Legion Riders, Wheatfield Post 1451, on May 21. The riders visited the Niagara Hospice campus in Lockport, where staff, volunteers and the community members honored veterans and service personnel with a brief ceremony at the Service Memorial Wall in the Niagara Hospice Memorial Gardens.

War of 1812 video at Lewiston Museum

Stephen Powell of Odessa Pictures Buffalo, and the Lewiston Council on the Arts have collaborated to produce "War on the Niagara: A Trail of Revenge," a 10-minute video that describes a series of skirmishes and battles that broke out along the Niagara Frontier during the War of 1812. This exciting and colorful film takes a close look at some of those raids and retraces the steps of the marching armies.

Legislation commemorates Bicentennial of War of 1812

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, today helped pass legislation that will encourage tourism and help create local jobs in the Niagara Falls region. The bill establishes the temporary New York State War of 1812 200th Anniversary Commemoration Commission, which will plan and execute a number of War of 1812 re-enactments and other tourism events.

Old Fort Niagara hosts Memorial Day weekend tribute

Old Fort Niagara is one of longest occupied military bases in North America and, on Memorial Day weekend, the historic site plans a dramatic exhibition of four centuries of military history. In addition to the fort's usual array of red-coated, musket bearing soldiers, visitors will see WWII jeeps and GI's, WWI doughboys, as well as troops from the War of 1812, Civil War, and Spanish American conflicts.

Lewiston 1-for-2 with Greenway approvals

The Niagara River Greenway Commission on Tuesday approved one of two projects submitted by the Town of Lewiston. Commissioners said the renovation of Toohey Park in the Village of Lewiston is consistent with the Greenway Plan. They didn't feel the same way about the Colonial Village Park restoration project, however, and did not endorse the proposal.

Porter OKs spending items, nixes raise proposal

Porter Town Board members OK'd two significant spending expenditures and rejected a third, among its regular meeting items Monday at Town Hall. Included was a funds transfer approval towards the purchase of a new truck for the town Highway Department, approval of a contract for Town Hall HVAC updating, and the board opting to reject a request from Supervisor Mert Wiepert to adjust the entry-level salaries of summer youth recreation workers.
