Niagara University is pleased to announce that Monica Romeo has been promoted to director of counseling services following a national search.

In her new position, Romeo will be responsible for the planning, development and supervision of the Office of Counseling Services, which makes professional mental health counseling services available to meet the personal wellness, developmental, preventative and remedial counseling needs of university students. She will also play a principal role in this summer's review and development of university crisis protocols.

Romeo, a native of Lewiston and current Niagara Falls resident, succeeds Tom McDermott, who recently retired after 51 years at Niagara University.

A New York state-licensed mental health counselor, Romeo has spent most of the past 15 years working in the field of mental health at the university level, including seven at Niagara. She has earned two master's degrees from NU, one in mental health counseling and the other in elementary education. Romeo possesses accreditations in therapeutic crisis intervention and non-violent crisis intervention, and is a certified QPR gate keeper trainer. She is presently working toward a Doctor of Philosophy in counseling education at the State University of New York at Buffalo, with an anticipated completion date next summer.

"Monica is obviously no stranger to NU and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position," stated Dr. Kevin P. Hearn, vice president for student life. "We are very excited to have someone with Monica's talents and leadership abilities in house and look forward to her contributions as director."

During her time at Niagara, and in addition to her work in counseling services, Romeo has provided numerous workshops, presentations and counsel to students on subjects ranging from crisis intervention to yoga, as well as tips for keeping mentally and physically fit. She also serves as an adjunct professor, teaching graduate courses in psychopharmacology and multicultural counseling.

Romeo received Niagara University's Employee of the Month Award in February 2009, when it was mentioned that her "commitment to Niagara is evident in all she does." Another nomination stated that Romeo is the epitome of a consummate professional: "Monica has tremendous interpersonal skills highlighted by the fact that students rave about her and ask specifically for her." A third comment suggested that she "treats everyone with dignity and respect, as well as warmth and kindness."
