As many of my readers know, I don't sit around the house too long. My wife and I like to get out and meet and talk with people, and when I do that I learn a lot of neat "stuff." And you see a lot of that "stuff" here in my column.

State Sen. George Maziarz escorted 27 local veterans to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, on his Western New York Heroes Flight. Most were World War II veterans, but a few Korean War vets also were included.

Empire State Development's board of directors met today in New York City and approved $6.1 million in funding for projects that will create more than 70 new jobs and retain nearly 300 jobs throughout the Empire State. This funding will leverage more than $244 million in additional investments to support business growth and lay the groundwork for future economic growth and job creation.

Joan A. Droit had a lifetime commitment to children and young adults. For 40 years she was a Grand Island teacher, beginning at the elementary level, and retiring from the high school, where she taught English, humanities and social studies and was always active in school activities.

Islanders are mourning the passing of a longtime teacher who put students at the center of her work.
Retired teacher and current school board trustee Joan Droit died Saturday. She was elected to the Board of Education on May 17, 2011.
"The Grand Island Central School District wishes to acknowledge the contribution Joan Droit made on behalf of students, faculty and the school community at large," the district said in a statement.
