2020 Taste of Buffalo Presented by Tops goes virtual

Together with Tops Friendly Markets, organizers of the 2020 Taste of Buffalo on Monday announced plans for a virtual version of this summer's food festival. To ensure the health and safety of guests, the event's board of directors made the decision to introduce "Taste of Buffalo at Home," a virtual food festival.

Cuomo: State helping to develop national criteria for identifying & responding to COVID-related illness in children

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Saturday announced that, at the request of the CDC, the state is helping to develop the national criteria for identifying and responding to COVID-related illness. The State Department of Health is also partnering with the NY Genome Center and Rockefeller University to conduct a genome and RNA sequencing study to better understand COVID-related illnesses in children and the possible genetic basis of this syndrome.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Saturday announced the launch of a new initiative to expand access to testing in low-income communities and communities of color. The state is partnering with Northwell Health to establish an initial 24 temporary testing sites at churches in predominately minority communities in downstate New York to build on the state's network of downstate testing sites.

The Board of Education election and budget vote will take place on Tuesday, June 9. It will be conducted entirely by mail-in ballot. Per guidance from New York state, we will first send out a postcard outlining specifics of the budget, election and voter qualification to each household. Official ballots will be mailed the third week of May to each of the 20,000 registered voters in the district.

New sales tax data reinforce 'troubling findings' of COVID-19 Economic Impact Report

The New York State Association of Counties announced that, this week, counties received their first installment of sales tax directly related to the first month where the statewide lock down on economic activity was in effect. In aggregate, the county sales tax collections compared to the same period last year were down about 26%. This ranges from about 16% to nearly 37% by county (not including tax rate changes).
USDA seeks feedback from producers about 2020 crops and stocks

NYSEG, an AVANGRID company, in conjunction with the Avangrid Foundation announced this week an additional donation of $175,000 to emergency response organizations across its service area to support their ongoing COVID-19 response and recovery efforts. Poloncarz signs emergency order extending preparation time for plan to close anticipated deficit

On Friday, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz signed an emergency order to modify section 2511 of the Erie County Charter and extend the administration's deadline for completing a plan to close an anticipated budget deficit caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The order extends the deadline for completing a plan from seven days to 30 days and allows for potential, as-yet-unrealized federal assistance to be factored in.

There have been 73 reported cases in New York where children are experiencing symptoms similar to Kawasaki disease and toxic shock-like syndrome possibly due to COVID-19.

Higgins: Over $1.3 million for health centers to expand community testing

Congressman Brian Higgins announced more than $1.3 million in funding awarded to federally qualified health care clinics to expand COVID-19 testing capacity in Western New York. The supplemental funding was included in the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act, approved by the House of Representatives on April 23, which provided $25 billion to expand testing nationwide.
