On Wednesday, July 1, the Niagara Small Business Development Center and speaker Shieke Sharpe, certified public accountant and certified fraud examiner, will present two live webinars covering the recent changes to the Paycheck Protection Program. These webinars will also include an overview of the revised PPP forgiveness application and the new short form. Sharpe will review both forms, step by step, and help attendees determine which form is right for their business. There also will be time for Q&A.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced additional DEC campgrounds in the Adirondack and Catskill parks will open on July 1 to existing reservation holders for the 2020 season. To maintain social distancing and reduce the density of facilities and protect visitors, DEC is not accepting additional reservations or walk-in camping for the 2020 season at this time. Only existing reservations for all DEC campgrounds will be honored. Visit DEC's website for the latest updates on DEC campgrounds and information about each facility.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the Women's Corporate Leadership Academy is now accepting applications for its first inaugural class this fall. The academy will be a part of SUNY Empire State College, where its programs were developed by faculty and staff. The mission of the Women's Corporate Leadership Academy is to prepare women for executive and board positions, and to work with organizations across New York to improve their gender representation. The governor first proposed the creation of the academy in his State of the State agenda.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, in cooperation with seven Great Lakes states and two Canadian provinces, announced the second annual "Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Landing Blitz," a regional campaign to inform boaters and others about the risks of introducing and spreading these invasive pests. During this coordinated outreach effort, partners throughout the Great Lakes region will be educating the public at hundreds of water access sites from June 28 to July 5.

If you've driven through the Niagara-Wheatfield School District in the last few weeks, you've certainly noticed the myriad black and red lawn signs honoring recent high school graduates. They're generally about the standard size of the campaign signs you see around election time, roughly 24-by-18-inches or so. They make for a nice, quaint, school-spirited way for a parent to show pride in their child's accomplishments.

The Wheatfield Town Board held a brief special meeting via Zoom on Monday. Among the announcements, the board declared an end to the town's state of emergency put in place due to the coronavirus. A request from a local softball league to utilize town playing fields was also denied.

Although initially thought to be included in Gov. Andrew Cuomo's phase four reopening plans, this week malls across the state learned they would have to remain closed for now. During the governor's press briefing on Wednesday, Cuomo said state health officials would continue to "study malls, movie theaters and gyms," as concerns rise that air conditioning systems could propel a resurgence of the coronavirus.
