Trustees in the Village of Lewiston voted Tuesday to amend a portion of the municipal law dealing with sign regulations. The most notable changes include prohibition of A-frame or "sandwich board" signs, and stronger language banning flashing electronic and neon lights.

A number of panelists spoke volumes on the Common Core standards, big business and privatization of the educational system in New York state, at an Education Summit held Feb. 13 by Assemblyman John Ceretto at Niagara Falls High School.

"The governor acknowledges that things are messed up," commented Douglas Regan, director of the Partnership for Smarter Schools and an educator for 42 years. He defined his group's four cornerstones: smarter school assessment; smarter teacher evaluation; smarter professional development and, smarter use of data.

Permit distribution for the Canada goose hunting season, which runs from March 1-10 for Fort Niagara, Wilson Tuscarora and Golden Hill state parks, will be done by lottery. The lotteries for hunting during these times will be held Feb. 26 for hunting March 1-5, and March 5 for hunting March 6-10.

Cuomo announced Friday Empire State Development has approved more than $9 million in New York state broadband grants to support five projects that will expand access to broadband services for approximately 33,000 households, 4,500 businesses and 55 community anchor institutions across upstate New York, including in the Capital Region, Western New York, Finger Lakes, Southern Tier, Central New York, North Country and Mohawk Valley regions.

Congressman Collins seeks to block federal dollars for criminal college program

Congressman Chris Collins will introduce legislation to prohibit the use of federal taxpayer dollars to provide a college education to convicted criminals. The pending legislation is in response to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's announced plan to use taxpayer dollars to fund college degree programs for convicted criminals in New York state prisons.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons provides states with funding for educational and other programs at state prisons and correctional facilities. Collins' legislation would ban states from using the federal taxpayer dollars to fund college degree programs for convicted criminals.
